The Manitowoc Co Jail is a detention center located at 1025 S 9th St Manitowoc, WI which is operated locally by the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Manitowoc County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Manitowoc Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.
Manitowoc County Jail is dedicated to maintaining public trust and safety by effectively managing incarcerated individuals within its facility. The jail adheres to standards established by the U.S. Constitution, state statutes, administrative codes, and the policies and procedures of Manitowoc County.
The facility aims to assist offenders in coping with their incarceration and preparing for reintegration into the community, better equipped to make positive choices as contributing members of society. This objective is pursued by offering educational programs, treatment, restorative opportunities, and ensuring medical care and nutritional needs are met. Programs such as ministry, AA/NA, Life Skills, AODA, mental health support, LTC college preparation, and adult basic education (GED/HSED) are available to inmates of minimum and medium classification. It is the responsibility of the inmates to sign up or request these opportunities. The jail corrects poor behavior through a structured environment and a classification system, while committing to treat everyone with dignity and respect, regardless of the provocation or reason for incarceration.
Furthermore, Manitowoc County Jail acknowledges its ethical and legal obligation to continually train its professional staff to create a safe and secure environment for employees, the incarcerated, and the broader community. The facility envisions a safer community by providing re-entry programs through partnerships with other agencies and organizations upon an individual's release.
There are new detainees delivered to the jail daily, you can see arrest records here. Some are released after putting up bail, are released to a pretrial services caseload, are placed under supervision by a probation agency, or are released on their own recognizance with an agreement to appear in court. The inmate's classification is based on the type of current and past crimes they are charged with or have been found guilty of. Participation in video visitation at Manitowoc County Jail is a privilege, and both visitors and inmates are expected to conduct themselves appropriately at all times. All kiosks are subject to monitoring and recording, and any behavior that does not comply with visitation rules will result in the loss of visiting privileges.
For family and friends, all visitors must obtain prior approval to visit an inmate by creating an account. The approval process can take up to 48 hours, after which an email will be sent to the provided address indicating approval or denial. It is important to note that visitors should not call the jail to check their approval status. All visits, whether remote or on-site, must be prescheduled online.
Visitors must adhere to several rules to maintain visitation privileges. The use of cell phones, cameras, or other internet-enabled devices is prohibited, and no pictures of the video screen are allowed. The dress code requires conservative and respectable attire, with low-cut tops, shirts exposing midriff areas, or any provocative clothing being grounds for visit termination at an officer’s discretion. Visitors appearing under the influence of alcohol or drugs, displaying contraband, or showing gang signs or symbols will have their visits canceled and may be banned from future visits. Scheduled visits must be between the approved visitor and the inmate they are scheduled to visit; otherwise, the visit may be terminated. Visitors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian to visit an incarcerated immediate family member. Visits may be terminated or denied at any time due to safety concerns, rule violations, or security risks.
