The MCSO-ITR is a detention center located at 303 W Pima St Gila Bend, AZ which is operated locally by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Maricopa County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Gila Bend Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.
The Maricopa County Intake, Transfer, and Release (ITR) Jail is a modern facility built in 2019/2020, spanning approximately 190,000 square feet. This facility replaced the Central Intake processing center previously located at the 4th Avenue Jail in downtown Phoenix, offering a more efficient intake and booking process.
The ITR Jail features four fully functional courtrooms and is designed to process all self-surrender detainees complying with court orders to serve jail sentences. It also handles all releases from custody within the Maricopa County Jail system. Each year, the ITR processes approximately 100,000 bookings and 90,000 releases, highlighting its critical role in the county's criminal justice system.
Attached to the ITR is a short-term facility with a capacity of 512 beds. This allows inmates to access necessary medical and mental health services, ensuring better treatment and connection to community resources. Additionally, the ITR includes a "Transportation Hub," facilitating the coordinated movement of defendants into and out of custody across the Sheriff's Office's network of five jails.
The strategic design and comprehensive services provided by the ITR Jail enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of Maricopa County's detention and release processes, underscoring its commitment to improving inmate management and public safety.
