The Marquette Co Jail is a detention center located at 236 W Baraga Ave Marquette, MI which is operated locally by the Marquette County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Marquette County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Marquette Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.

As mandated by state statute, the operation of the county jail falls under the responsibility of the Sheriff. The Marquette County Jail, with an 80-bed capacity, can also accommodate up to 10 federal inmates. This three-story facility classifies inmates based on the severity of their crimes, with designated blocks on each floor. The staff adheres to a philosophy of maintaining the highest level of security while ensuring a constitutionally safe and healthy environment for both inmates and staff. This philosophy is supported by employing trained, professional Corrections Officers and maintaining an ongoing training program, ensuring high standards in hiring and continued education. Consequently, the Marquette County Jail is regarded as one of the top-rated jails in the State of Michigan.

Service hours at the main jail facility are generally open to the public, except during specific periods: 6:45 a.m. to 7:15 a.m., 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and 4:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. daily. Additional closures may occur as necessary for safe jail operations.

Regarding inmate status information, before arraignment, the only information provided is whether an individual is lodged and their bond amount. Messages will not be relayed to inmates unless there is a verifiable emergency.

Inmates at the Marquette County Jail may also receive postcards via the United States Postal Service. Mail from attorneys, the courts, or clergy is also permitted through USPS.

Prescription medication for pre-existing conditions is allowed but must be verified by the jail health care provider before administration. Medications must be in their original containers; no mixed medications are authorized.

Money deposits for bond or commissary purchases can be made through jailatm.com by creating an account, or at the main jail using the ATM located in the vestibule.

Personal items are generally not accepted for inmates housed at the main jail facility, with exceptions made for court-ordered personal clothing for jury trials. Hygiene items are provided by the jail or can be purchased through the commissary.

Inmates have access to books via the jail library. Newspaper and magazine subscriptions are permitted by direct mail from the publisher. Upon release, it is the inmate's responsibility to cancel any subscriptions. Items received after an inmate's release are not returned or forwarded but are placed in the jail library for circulation. Pornographic, suggestive materials or titles on the MDOC list of banned books are not accepted.

The Sheriff's Release Program/Work Release allows inmates to maintain employment within the community during their incarceration, with the expectation of continued employment upon sentence completion. Inmates participate in a pass program, going to and from work according to an employer-provided and jail-approved schedule. The cost for this program is $25 per day for the offender.

The School Release program enables inmates to stay enrolled in an accredited school to achieve meaningful educational goals. This program also allows eligible clients to be released for employment training through employers or community service programs. Verification of enrollment and school approval is required before release on a permission pass.

Treatment Release allows inmates to attend substance abuse treatment programs in the community during incarceration, and to continue treatment and abstinence post-release. For all-day parole inquiries, contact Sergeant Jamie Robillard at the Marquette County Community Corrections Detention Center at 906-249-1041 ext. 202.
