The Mason Co Jail is a detention center located at 302 N Delia St Ludington, MI which is operated locally by the Mason County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Mason County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Ludington Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.

Originally constructed in 1958, the jail underwent an expansion project in 1999, transforming the facility from a 45-bed to a 104-bed capacity. Operated by a dedicated corrections staff of 17 personnel, the jail ensures comprehensive inmate management and safety. The facility also features an in-house kitchen, added in 2006, staffed by three kitchen workers responsible for preparing and providing daily meals to the inmates. A lobby kiosk is available for depositing funds into inmate accounts, enabling them to purchase commissary items.

The jail offers various church and rehabilitative services, contributing to the spiritual and personal development of the inmates. In 2013, Sheriff Cole introduced the inmate work crew programs, which have since become an integral part of the facility’s community service efforts. These work crews participate in county cleanup activities, maintain petunia beds, assist with setting up Red Cross blood drives, clean up roadside trash near the airport, and support events like the Relay for Life by setting up and tearing down necessary equipment.

Mail - All incoming mail must be a postcard. Notes and cards not sent via US Postal Service are not considered mail and will not be accepted.

Items allowed to be received via mail:

In-House Programs

  • Educational and Substance Abuse Counseling is available for inmates of appropriate classifications
  • Medical and Mental Health Services
  • Health services (inmates may request by submitting a request form)

Jail staff will handle emergencies in accordance with department policy. If medical care or treatment is required during an inmate’s confinement, Michigan law allows the county to seek reimbursement for the cost of medical services. Monies may be drawn out of an inmate’s account at the time of service, or attached to their Room/Board billing. Nurses’ visits are $35.00 per visit. The cost of prescriptions is the actual cost. Any outside medical services are billed at cost.

Room and Board Billing - All sentenced inmates will be billed $35.00 a day for room and board. The final bill is due within 30 days after an inmate’s release. If paid within 30 days, or a payment schedule is agreed upon, there will be a reduction taken. If a bill is not paid, it will be referred to the collections agency for collection.

Inmate Commissary - Each inmate has a commissary account that acts like a bank account while he/she is in jail. Personal items, snacks, stamps, paper and other small items can be ordered using the commissary account. Services that the inmate must pay for can be paid for using the commissary account. Money may be deposited to an inmate’s account by the people on their approved visitor list only. Money deposits can be made only during visiting times and/or through the US Postal Service.
