The MCJAS-Attention Center South is within the jurisdiction of the Ohio Department of Juvenile Justice located at 2299 Reiser Avenue SE, New Philadelphia, OH.
The facility provides supervision of youth in a safe, secure and humane environment. Services for youth include education, mental health, substance abuse, and health care. The MCJAS Attention Center South, built in 2014 in Tuscarawas County, is a 24-bed secure facility serving female youth under 19 years old from all four member counties adjacent to the Tuscarawas County Jail. Its primary aim is to provide safe, secure, and humane temporary custody in line with the Ohio Revised Code, with length of stay determined by the Courts.
The Responsible Behavior Program, a cornerstone of all attention centers, features five progressive levels where youth earn privileges by demonstrating pro-social behavior and personal responsibility. The educational program, provided by the New Philadelphia School System, maintains high standards, with teachers ensuring individualized attention to meet each youth's needs, emphasizing reading.
The dedicated staff plays a pivotal role, focusing on teaching and empowering youth with skills for success both in the program and the community. Life skills sessions cover various topics, including job application and interview skills, as well as addressing "Criminal Thinking Errors" to promote accountability and behavioral correction.
Meals are prepared daily by a full-time cook, and the Medical Department, led by a full-time Registered Nurse, attends to the daily health needs of the youth. Weekly church sessions cater to spiritual needs, supported by a positive church volunteer program emphasizing nurturing and forgiveness.
Family visitation is encouraged to facilitate the transition back home, recognizing its importance in youth reintegration. The center is actively developing relationships with other county agencies like the Health Department to provide educational support on pertinent issues affecting the youth. The staff remains committed to supporting the current and future youth at the center.
