The Middle River Jail is a detention center located at 350 Technology Dr Staunton, VA which is operated locally by the Independent City County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Independent City County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Staunton Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.

MRRJ was built to alleviate the need for additional space due to the increasing jail population at the Augusta County Jail, formerly located in downtown Staunton, VA. MRRJ enabled inmates that were formerly being held in other facilities due to overcrowding to return back to their local jurisdiction. Not only did this move make it easier for inmate families to visit, but it also provided an exponential increase in living space, recreation, programming, and many more opportunities giving inmates the tools to help them succeed upon their re-entry back into our community.

The facility was built on 28 acres which is conveniently located in close proximity to the I-81 and I-64 interchange in Augusta County. The building’s 212,020 square feet has an operational capacity of 902 beds to include both male and female housing units.
