Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.

While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.

The NDSP is a maximum-security facility accommodating 1,550 inmates across seven specialized units: North, East, West, South, Segregation, Overflow, and Treatment. Each unit caters to distinct offender needs, with the North unit serving as the initial orientation and reception area. Here, inmates undergo mental, physical, and medical assessments, as well as evaluations for necessary treatment programs.

Inmates in the North and South units typically reside in double-bunked cells. NDSP offers alcohol and substance abuse treatment alongside group therapies, anger management courses, and behavioral change programs. Additionally, vocational training and educational opportunities are provided to support inmate rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.

Visitation Information

Please review the Visitor Clothing Rules and General Visiting Rules below to learn more about our visitation processes and rules. Please note, that each facility has additional rules that apply only to that facility. All men sentenced to the NDDOCR are received at the North Dakota State Penitentiary (NDSP) in Bismarck. New arrivals will go through an orientation program for approximately four weeks. During orientation, the rules are explained, and various staff members provide information on the programs available. Upon completion of orientation, the Classification Committee meets with the residents and assigns them a custody level, and housing unit, and recommends programming (work, education, and therapy) that may be beneficial for the residents during their incarceration.
