The NDCS - Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF) is within the jurisdiction of the Nebraska Department of Juvenile Justice located at 2610 N 20th St E, Omaha, NE.
The facility provides supervision of youth in a safe, secure and humane environment. Services for youth include education, mental health, substance abuse, and health care. Medical and mental health are contracted services. Educational services are funded by the Nebraska Department of Education through local school districts.
A typical day in secure detention would involve hygiene, meals, school, structured physical and educational activities, and court appearance as scheduled. The average length of stay in secure state detention is approximately 60 days.
The NCYF is a male correctional institution housing both general population adult units and specialized housing for youthful offenders tried as adults. Operating as a maximum, medium, and minimum security facility, NCYF spans approximately 54,000 square feet and was constructed at a cost of around $10.8 million. Accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA) since 2000, NCYF focuses on custody and unit management to ensure safety for staff, inmates, and the public while emphasizing programming and discipline.
Inmates at NCYF have access to a range of recreational activities offered seven days a week. Youthful offenders have the opportunity to apply for community custody programs, including work detail, work release, or education release, aimed at their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
All male offenders sentenced by Nebraska county and district courts are initially processed at the Reception and Treatment Center (RTC) in Lincoln. At RTC, inmates undergo intake procedures such as obtaining an inmate number, photography, fingerprinting and providing a DNA sample.
Following completion of intake procedures at RTC, youthful offenders are promptly transferred to NCYF. Upon arrival, they undergo additional in-processing, receive an initial medical screening, are assigned living quarters, and are provided with clothing, bedding, and an inventory of personal belongings. After a 30-day orientation period, individuals transition into the general population of the facility.
Juvenile facilities overseen by the State of Nebraska do not publish the names of the offenders housed in their facility. As such, there is no public forum for this information.
