The NNMCF, formerly known as the New Mexico Women's Correctional Facility (NMWCF), is a privately owned prison located in Cibola County. Operated by CoreCivic and managed by the New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD), it opened its doors in 1989 as the first privatized women's prison in the United States.

In a significant transition, state officials announced plans in late 2015 to relocate all female inmates from the facility and consolidate New Mexico's population of approximately 1200 sex offenders here. This initiative aimed to optimize the utilization of the facility's resources and better address the needs of the inmate population. Consequently, in August 2016, the facility was rebranded as the Northwest New Mexico Correctional Center.

Recognizing the unique challenges faced by female offenders, the New Mexico Corrections Department established the Office of Female Offender Services in May 2003. This office collaborates closely with NMWCF to provide a gender-responsive environment offering a comprehensive array of programs and services. These initiatives are tailored to address the specific needs of women, encompassing education, career counseling, vocational training, life skills development (including parenting and pre-release preparation), and medical and mental health care.

From the moment of intake through the process of parole, the emphasis remains on facilitating successful reintegration into the community and family. This holistic approach acknowledges the importance of supporting female offenders in their journey toward rehabilitation and societal re-engagement. Through a continuum of care and support, the NNMCF endeavors to empower women to expand their economic and social roles, fostering positive outcomes for both individuals and communities.
