Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.

While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.

Altona CF holds a unique history. Its central administrative and school building used to be the Altona Central School, adding a personal touch for some corrections officers who might have walked its halls as children. But today, Altona serves a different purpose, offering opportunities for growth and rehabilitation to its incarcerated residents.

One way Altona empowers individuals is through vocational training. Inmates can gain valuable skills in custodial and building maintenance, learning skills applicable both within the facility and upon release. Drafting programs further equip them with technical knowledge, increasing their employability options.

However, Altona recognizes that rehabilitation goes beyond job skills. Inmates can access alcohol and substance abuse treatment programs, confronting harmful dependencies and paving the way for healthier lives. The facility also takes a family-oriented approach, offering programs that teach parental skills and provide individual and family counseling. These initiatives strengthen family bonds and prepare inmates for successful reintegration into their communities.

Beyond its focus on individuals, Altona demonstrates a commitment to environmental responsibility. An inmate-led waste processing program diverts tons of material from landfills each year through composting and recycling. This initiative not only saves taxpayer dollars but also instills a sense of environmental awareness in participants.

From its historic beginnings to its innovative programs, Altona Correctional Facility exemplifies a shift in correctional philosophy. By focusing on skills development, addiction recovery, and family support, Altona empowers individuals to build brighter futures for themselves and the communities they will rejoin.
