The Oktibbeha Co Jail is a detention center located at 111 Dr Douglas L. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Oktibbeha County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Starkville Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

Although the Sheriff is ultimately responsible for running the Oktibbeha County Jail which houses up to 82 inmates in the main jail, the jail's day-to-day operations is maintained by a Jail Administrator. The Oktibbeha County Jail Administrator is responsible for planning, organizing and implementing operations and programs in the jail division. The Jail Administrator assigns and directs subordinates, ensuring that all policies, rules, regulations, orders, procedures and directives are enforced and implemented. The Jail Administrator makes independent decisions or recommendations in the hiring, promotion, transfer, discipline or discharge of jail employees by department policy and procedures. The Jail Administrator is directly accountable to the Sheriff and Chief Deputy for the implementation of all the Sheriff's orders and directions concerning the operation of the jail division.

The Oktibbeha County Jail is staffed by a Jail Supervisor and four Jailers on four shifts. Duties include booking, incarcerating, feeding, bonding, the release of inmates, and caring for prisoners. Daily routines include but not limited to, the preparation of prisoners for court appearances, doctor/hospital visits and appointments, transportation to State facilities, and providing for the general security of the Oktibbeha County Jail.

Individuals who do not post bail within the first twenty-four hours are required to appear before a judge. During this first appearance, conducted either in person or via telephone, the judge informs the arrested person of the charges against them and sets the bond amount.

Following the intake process, which includes property inventory, medical screening, and booking, inmates are assigned to the general population. The jail is designed with "pods," featuring a large common area with affixed tables and attached seats, and individual cells typically on two levels. Inmates spend certain times in their cells and other times congregating in the pod for activities like playing cards, games, reading, or watching television. Movement outside the pod, such as trips to the commissary, library, or recreation area, occurs under the constant supervision of unarmed correctional officers. The environment in the county jail is considered less stressful than that of a prison because the sentences are much shorter.
