The Pend Oreille Co Jail is a detention center located at 331 S Garden Ave Newport, WA which is operated locally by the Pend Oreille County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Pend Oreille County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Newport Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.

The Pend Oreille County Correctional Facility, under the jurisdiction of the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office, houses both male and female inmates awaiting trial or serving sentences. With a capacity of 40 beds, the facility is managed by the Correction’s Captain, the Correction’s Sergeant, and Correction Officers. In addition to local inmates, the facility holds individuals from various agencies, including contracts with the Washington State Department of Corrections, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Border Patrol, and U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The corrections staff maintains close collaboration with Pend Oreille County Superior and District Courts. Regular visits from Pend Oreille Counseling Services and Pend Oreille Sheriff’s Chaplain Corp are provided, along with medical services from Newport Community Hospital.

Upon booking, only a limited amount of property is accepted for inmate storage. Any unaccepted property is impounded by the arresting agency. Inmates may release property to a friend or relative within 72 hours of booking or upon transfer to the Department of Corrections after sentencing, by completing a Property Release Form.

Inmates transferring to another institution must complete a Property Release Form and arrange for the disposal or transfer of remaining property. Items left longer than thirty days are disposed of per the Revised Code of Washington (RCW 63.42.040). Property of deceased inmates is held for one hundred and eighty days before disposal.

For jury trials, the jail accepts Jury Trial clothing only with a judge’s signed order from the courts. Clothing should be brought the day before the trial and picked up within five working days after the trial ends.

A new inmate system, called Chirping, allows inmates to send text messages to family members. Chirping devices provide a certain number of free text messages initially, with the inmate having three days to add funds. Monthly fees for the device and services are automatically deducted, along with flat rates for messages. Detailed fee charges for Chirp devices can be found on the www.inmatesales.com website.
