The Pima County Juvenile Detention Center is a medium to low-security detention center located at 2225 E Ajo Way Tuscon, AZ that is operated locally by the Juvenile Justice Department and holds youths awaiting the determination of punishment for the crimes of which they are accused. Most of the adolescents are here for less than two years.

The juvenile justice system differs from the adult system, focusing on rehabilitation and recognizing the developmental differences in juveniles. It aims to protect both the child and the public and helps juveniles become productive adults.

Juveniles are detained if they pose a threat, may miss court, or violate court orders. Parental involvement is crucial for effective supervision and rehabilitation.

Key differences in terminology include "taken into custody" instead of "arrest" and "supervision" instead of "probation." Referrals usually come from law enforcement, and an intake social worker decides the juvenile's placement. An inquiry can lead to dismissal, corrective action, or court involvement.

The process includes a plea hearing, possible evaluations, a pre-trial conference, a fact-finding hearing, and a dispositional hearing to determine the case's outcome. Parents may need to cover associated costs.

The Pima County Juvenile Detention Center is committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for youth through positive role modeling and structured programming. The center's primary focus is on justice, healing, and health, aiming to provide restorative justice, foster healing, and promote health within a safe and secure learning environment.

The primary goal of the Detention Center is to provide safe, temporary custody for individuals under the age of 18 who are accused of conduct subject to the jurisdiction of the court. The center's principle-guided services focus on restorative justice and are implemented through a change-based delivery system known as the Step Up to Juvenile Justice program. This program seeks to stabilize youths' harmful or out-of-control behavior, help them recognize the need for change, and teach them appropriate accountability. By doing so, the center prepares youths for successful reintegration into the community and facilitates public safety by developing their law-abiding behaviors and successful living skills.

The Detention Center emphasizes creating a safe environment anchored in five essential elements: structure, safety, care, health, and education. These elements are integral to the secure living units and form the foundation of the center's services, which are outcome-focused. Activities and programs are designed to develop youths' skills in maintaining orderly and law-abiding behavior, accountability and responsibility, avoiding trouble or relapse, self-sufficiency and competency, and building positive support systems.

The center employs a client-centered approach, positively engaging with the youths and building therapeutic rapport to motivate their desire for change. Guided by the principles of "Therapeutic Jurisprudence," the center strives to create Healing Justice for victims, offenders, and the community. It actively collaborates with the community, public agencies, and private entities to provide a wide range of services that support the juveniles' physical, emotional, and social development. These efforts promote justice, education, and the prevention of delinquency and abuse, ensuring a holistic approach to juvenile rehabilitation and community betterment.
