At the Rapides Parish Transitional Work Program, inmates with good behavior have access to traditional jobs in the public sector during the day. The program offers varying degrees of freedom, some even allowing prisoners to work during the week and return home, serving their sentences on only weekends. Depending on the terms (which change from time to time), inmates may reside in a halfway house or under home confinement when not working. As they near their release date, residents may transition to reintegration programs, with potential offers of full-time employment upon full release.

Work release program initiatives have proven benefits, including increased employment opportunities post-release, accelerated job acquisition, higher post-release earnings, and reduced recidivism rates among participants. Rapides TWP is committed to empowering inmates with skills and opportunities for successful reentry into society.

The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office Transitional Work Program accommodates around 315 transitional work offenders, aiming to prepare them for successful reintegration into society by providing employment opportunities throughout the community. Currently, approximately 45 offenders are engaged in trash pick-up duties across Rapides Parish, collectively collecting about 400,000 pounds of trash annually. To report roadside trash or request appliance pick-up, individuals can contact the Rapides Parish Highway Department, with appliance collections scheduled for the second Monday of each month.

Moreover, the Produce Farm initiative involves approximately eight to ten offenders who are responsible for various tasks, including preparing, planting, and harvesting vegetables grown by the department. Through these programs, the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office endeavors to equip offenders with valuable skills and opportunities for future employment.
