The Rusk Co Jail is a detention center located at 311 E Miner Ave Ladysmith, WI which is operated locally by the Rusk County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Rusk County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Ladysmith Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.
If you have been sentenced to the Rusk County Jail, this guide to jail procedures will help ensure your transition into the facility is as smooth as possible. Upon arrival, both your person and all property will be searched. You will then complete a booking process that includes general questions, a medical questionnaire, fingerprinting, and a photograph. Following this, you will change into a jail-issued uniform, and your clothing and any unauthorized property will be secured in a locked locker. You will be provided with a blanket, two sheets, a washcloth, a towel, and a hygiene kit containing soap, shampoo, deodorant, a toothbrush, toothpaste, a comb, and a Styrofoam cup. Personal hygiene supplies are not permitted, nor is any non-clothing item that can be ordered from the canteen.
Once processed, you will be placed in your living area, which is equipped with a bathroom, shower, television, and phone for inmate use. In your cellblock, you are allowed to have the following clothing items: seven white t-shirts or tank tops, seven pairs of white socks, seven pairs of white underwear, seven white sports bras or regular bras without underwires, and two pairs of white sweatshirts or thermal underwear. You will be required to follow all jail rules, including a wake-up time of 7:00 am and lockdown at 11:00 pm, with lights and televisions turned off.
Meals are served three times a day at 7:00 am, noon, and 5:00 pm. Your laundry, such as socks, underwear, and t-shirts, will be washed weekly, while linens and uniforms are washed twice a week, with blankets washed on scheduled days. You are also responsible for cleaning your cell and living area twice weekly. Inmates are allowed library privileges on designated days and can participate in group activities like Alcoholics Anonymous, 12-step programs, church services, and Bible study. Educational programs, including general schooling and GED classes, are also available.
Mail is sent and received daily, except on holidays and weekends. Phones are available in the cell blocks, and inmates can make collect calls or purchase phone time from the canteen. These procedures and amenities are in place to ensure the safety, order, and well-being of all inmates during their time at the Rusk County Jail.
