The Santa Cruz Co Jail is a detention center located at 2170 N Congress Dr Nogales, AZ which is operated locally by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Santa Cruz County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Nogales Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.
In November 2005, the residents of Santa Cruz County approved a half-cent sales tax increase to fund the establishment of a jail district and the construction of a new facility. The Tony Estrada Law Enforcement Center, which includes the new detention center, opened in 2011 and is designed to house 372 inmates. This modern facility replaces the former Santa Cruz County Detention Center on Hohokam Drive, which opened in 1974 with a capacity of 52 inmates. At the time of the original facility's opening, Santa Cruz County had a population of 15,000 residents, while Nogales, and Sonora had approximately 65,000 residents. Since 1974, the population of Nogales, Arizona has tripled, and Nogales, Sonora now has an estimated population of 350,000 people. Additionally, issues related to drug trafficking and illegal immigration have significantly increased.
