The Department of Detention oversees operations at the Santa Rosa County Detention Facility, commonly referred to as the "Jail." Comprising various specialized units, the facility is dedicated to achieving excellence in care, custody, and control for the inmate population. Sworn Detention Deputies, along with professional and contract staff, attend to inmate needs, ensuring a safe environment equipped with essential tools and resources crucial for successful reintegration into civilian life.

With a maximum housing capacity of 810 detainees, the facility features 23 dorms for housing and a specialized medical unit. Utilizing a podular-style design, it accommodates inmates across all custody levels, ranging from pre-trial detainees to those serving sentences of less than one year. Additionally, the facility houses U.S. Marshal and FBOP inmates through contracts with the U.S. Marshal’s Service, with proceeds benefiting the Santa Rosa County General Fund. Here is the latest release (Dec 2023) of the Inmate Handbook, detailing rules, regulations, and general information.

Admissions, Classification, and Release (ACR) form the cornerstone of the Detention Facility's operations. The ACR unit handles both new intakes and releases, prioritizing the safety and security of inmates and detention deputies. Working closely with the Classification and Transportation units, ACR manages inmate court dates, facilitates inmate introductions, and oversees the release process.

The Classification Unit, staffed by professional personnel and sworn deputies, plays a pivotal role in maintaining security and order within the facility. Responsible for categorizing inmates into different custody levels based on charges and behavior, this unit ensures inmate attendance at court dates while upholding the highest security standards in collaboration with other agencies.

Central to the inmate support network is the Programs Unit, which strives to address immediate needs, enhance quality of life, and facilitate successful reintegration into society. This unit offers inmates opportunities for educational advancement, acquisition of new work and life skills, and access to treatment programs addressing substance abuse and domestic violence issues. Through these initiatives, the facility aims to empower inmates and foster positive change during their time in custody.
