Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. Broad River CI is a state prison located in Columbia, South Carolina, operating at both close and medium custody levels for male inmates. Established in 1988, the institution provides various educational opportunities to inmates, including GED preparation, adult education, literacy programs, and Work Keys assessments. Additionally, inmates have the opportunity to obtain barber certification through the Barber Tech Academy and pursue bachelor's degrees through Benedict College's Bachelor's Degree Program. Employee Ability Skills training is also offered to enhance inmates' employability upon release.
Routine medical and dental care is provided on-site at Broad River CI, with 24-hour medical coverage ensuring inmates' health needs are met. The institution operates two separate plants under its Industries program. The Prison Industries I (P1-1) plant includes three work programs, manufacturing all vehicle license plates for the State of South Carolina in the Tag Plant and producing signs, decals, and nameplates for various governmental and non-profit organizations in the Sign Shop.

These include Narcotics Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous, Inmate Peer Support, Thinking for a Change, and Anger Management. Broad River CI serves various inmate populations, including the general population, Death Row inmates for the entire state, medically dependent individuals, and those within the special management unit (SMU). The medically dependent inmates are housed in the Moultrie Unit and receive round-the-clock medical care. The institution also accommodates inmates with special needs, including those who are deaf, blind, or require dialysis or sex offender treatment. Additionally, Broad River CI serves as the dialysis site for SCDC inmates.
Vocational training opportunities are available at Broad River CI, with inmates having access to programs such as the Sign Shop and License Plate Shop to acquire valuable skills for reintegration into society upon release.

Visits will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be scheduled in 2-hour blocks. General population inmates with visitation privileges will be allowed four in-person visits per month.
Inmates may have one visit per weekend and up to four visits per month.
Inmates may have up to four visitors at a time, one of which must be an adult. Children of all ages can visit. Children age 10 and older must have a government-issued photo ID to visit. Children age nine and younger must show a long-form birth certificate.
