When someone you care about ends up in a state prison, it can be tough to navigate the ins and outs of the system. From figuring out how to stay in touch to understanding what you can do to make their time easier, it can feel overwhelming. That's where this webpage comes in handy. It's here to help you get the lowdown on SCDC - Lieber Correctional Institution so you can stay connected and support your loved one during their time inside.

Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.

While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.

Lieber Correctional Institution and Reentry Center, a close custody facility for male inmates, offers essential services and programs to support rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society. In terms of education, the institution provides literacy programs and GED preparation courses to enhance academic skills.

Vocational training opportunities focus on carpentry skills, equipping inmates with valuable trade skills for future employment. Lieber CI's industries include various recycling projects in collaboration with a private sector company and a tire retreading operation for the state government, providing inmates with practical work experience.

Healthcare services at Lieber CI encompass routine medical and dental care with round-the-clock coverage, including a licensed infirmary catering to the needs of deaf and blind male inmates, as well as access to area mental health care.

The institution offers a range of programs aimed at personal and spiritual development, including religious services, volunteer opportunities, alcohol and drug education programs, recovery groups, and Impact of Crime classes. Recreational services promote physical fitness and leisure activities, while the Going Home for Good Pre-release program facilitates inmates' transition back into society. Violence prevention initiatives and collaboration with Voorhees College further contribute to holistic rehabilitation.

Lieber CI also engages with the community through initiatives like the Operation Behind Bars program, providing educational tours for at-risk youth and adults to gain insights into inmates' experiences and the factors contributing to criminal behavior.

Additionally, Lieber CI serves as a video conferencing site for parole hearings in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services, facilitating communication between inmates and parole officials. Through these comprehensive services and collaborative efforts, Lieber Correctional Institution and Reentry Center strive to promote positive change and successful reintegration for incarcerated individuals.
