When someone you care about ends up in a state prison, it can be tough to navigate the ins and outs of the system. From figuring out how to stay in touch to understanding what you can do to make their time easier, it can feel overwhelming. That's where this webpage comes in handy. It's here to help you get the lowdown on SCI Fayette so you can stay connected and support your loved one during their time inside.
Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.
While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.
SCI Fayette, a maximum-security state prison, houses approximately 2,050 inmates across 11 housing units, comprising both multiple occupancy cells and dormitories. Engaging in the Correctional Industries program, the facility employs inmates in a license plate factory that produces plates utilized throughout the state. Additionally, its metal factory manufactures furniture used within prison cells. Inmate labor is also integral to the community work program, involving landscaping for government agencies, cemeteries, and parks, as well as assisting in the loading and unloading of trucks for local food banks and roadside litter cleanup.
Spanning 53 acres within the perimeter and 205 acres outside, SCI Fayette features 36 operational structures, including one Special Needs Unit and one Special Management Unit. In terms of education, the facility offers academic programs ranging from adult basic education to GED preparation, alongside vocational training in HVAC, business education, computer-aided design, carpentry, welding, cosmetology, custodial maintenance, and electricity, with certifications available upon completion.
Inmate programs address various needs, including family and relationship support, sex offender treatment, re-entry preparation, substance use disorder therapy, mental health services, and programs focusing on offense-related behavior. These programs aim to facilitate rehabilitation and reduce recidivism rates.
Within Correctional Industries, the License Plate Factory produces aluminum plates for PennDOT and organizational plates for various state agencies, while the Metal Factory manufactures furniture and security products used within the prison system. These goods are supplied to state entities such as the Department of Corrections and the Pennsylvania State Police.
Furthermore, the Community Work Program contributes to local communities by assisting food banks with unloading and distributing supplies, maintaining churches, legions, and community centers, and conducting roadside cleanup efforts. Through these initiatives, SCI Fayette not only provides opportunities for inmate skill development and rehabilitation but also contributes positively to the broader community.
SCI Fayette maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
In-person visitation is available at all DOC facilities. Some visiting rules have changed, so please be sure to read this entire page and check out the updated Visiting Rules page, as well as the Visitor Guide before scheduling an in-person visit with an incarcerated loved one.
