When someone you care about ends up in a state prison, it can be tough to navigate the ins and outs of the system. From figuring out how to stay in touch to understanding what you can do to make their time easier, it can feel overwhelming. That's where this webpage comes in handy. It's here to help you get the lowdown on SCI Greene so you can stay connected and support your loved one during their time inside.

Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.

While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.

The State Correctional Institution at Greene initiated property negotiations with the Greene County Redevelopment Authority in November 1990, acquiring a 128-acre site known as the Allison Tract in Waynesburg, PA. The institution's lease was signed in May 1991 with groundbreaking taking place on October 29, 1991. The facility was dedicated on November 9, 1993, and began housing inmates on January 3, 1994, reaching full capacity by May 3, 1995. Construction concluded in March 1999, adding two new housing units within the perimeter: Unit K for inmates with mental health needs and Unit L for Level 5 inmates.

Covering 44 acres within the perimeter and 84 acres outside, SCI Greene comprises 33 operational structures, including 11 housing units featuring both cell and dormitory-style accommodations. Special features include a Residential Treatment Unit (RTU), Step-Down Unit (SDU), Secure Residential Treatment Unit (SRTU), Diversionary Treatment Unit (DTU), Management Control Unit (MCU), and a Long-Term Restricted Housing Unit.

With a staff of 691 full-time employees, the institution offers academic education up to the GED and Commonwealth Secondary Diploma (CSD) levels, along with vocational education in carpentry, business, HVAC, and more, all providing industry-recognized certifications. Inmate programs encompass family and relationship support, sex offender treatment, re-entry services, substance abuse therapy, offense-related interventions, and various mental health programs.

The facility also offers video visitation to enhance parenting skills and maintain family connections. Correctional Industries operates a garment factory employing 60 inmates and three staff members, producing items such as denim clothing and staff hats. Moreover, the Community Work Program provided 5,680 hours of community service, with projects ranging from maintenance services and painting for churches and volunteer fire departments to litter clean-up in collaboration with PENN DOT and assisting non-profit agencies in Greene, Washington, and Fayette Counties.
