When someone you care about ends up in a state prison, it can be tough to navigate the ins and outs of the system. From figuring out how to stay in touch to understanding what you can do to make their time easier, it can feel overwhelming. That's where this webpage comes in handy. It's here to help you get the lowdown on SCI Mahanoy so you can stay connected and support your loved one during their time inside.
Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.
While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.
SCI Mahanoy, a medium-security state prison, houses approximately 2,490 adult male inmates within its 35 buildings, including 11 housing units, which feature a mix of multi-occupancy cells and dormitory-style arrangements. Inmates have the opportunity to work in the correctional industries program, operating a distribution center for commissary items distributed to prisons in the eastern part of the state. Additionally, inmates can participate in a road crew tasked with garbage collection along the interstate.
The facility offers various vocational programs and apprenticeships aimed at equipping offenders with marketable skills, including painting, plumbing, culinary arts, and automotive technologies. Vocational training in computer-assisted drafting and warehouse operation is also available. SCI Mahanoy provides rehabilitative programming covering alcohol and substance abuse treatment, sex offender rehabilitation, violence prevention, mental health services, parenting courses, and re-entry preparation.
Constructed on a 222-acre tract of land, SCI Mahanoy was built to accommodate a 1,000-bed medium-security institution as part of Governor Casey's Operation Jump Start Program. The property, purchased by the Schuylkill County Redevelopment Authority, is leased to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania exclusively for the Department of Corrections' use.
Inside the perimeter, the facility spans 67 acres, with an additional 222 acres outside the perimeter. The prison features 35 operational structures, including 11 housing units, one of which is designated for special needs. The inmate population, with an average age of 38, is supported by a staff of 581 full-time employees.
Academic programs offered include adult basic education, GED preparation, and vocational education in various fields, each providing industry-recognized certifications. Inmates also have access to apprenticeship programs in plumbing, painting, electrician work, and more. The facility offers a range of inmate programs focusing on family relationships, substance abuse treatment, re-entry skills, and mental health support.
In the correctional industries sector, SCI Mahanoy operates a regional commissary distribution center, employing 90 inmates on one shift. The center serves nine institutions in the eastern part of Pennsylvania, supplying various items such as food, health and beauty products, clothing, footwear, and electronics to the inmate population.
SCI Mahanoy maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
In-person visitation is available at all DOC facilities. Some visiting rules have changed, so please be sure to read this entire page and check out the updated Visiting Rules page, as well as the Visitor Guide before scheduling an in-person visit with an incarcerated loved one. This page also contains instructions on how to schedule a no-cost video visit.
All in-person visits must be scheduled online at least three days in advance.
Video visitation is a free service offered to inmates and authorized visitors. All inmates are eligible to participate. Rules for video visits are generally the same as those for in-person visits at a facility. All non-legal video visits are monitored and recorded. Please review our detailed Visitor Guide prior to your visit.
