SCI Waymart commenced operations on October 26, 1989, a year ahead of schedule, in response to riots at SCI Camp Hill. Formerly Farview State Hospital, it provided immediate housing for 239 displaced inmates. By 1995, it transitioned into a Forensic Treatment Center (FTC), addressing psychiatric needs within the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections and accepting court-committed inmates from county facilities.
In 1999, SCI Waymart established a 50-bed Intermediate Care Unit (ICU), catering to inmates requiring extended psychiatric care post-FTC treatment. Originally constructed as Farview State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in 1911, the facility underwent numerous security enhancements and internal modifications over the years, comprising 33 interconnected buildings within the inner perimeter, along with auxiliary structures outside the perimeter.
The facility spans 19 acres inside and 351 acres outside the perimeter, encompassing a total of 50 buildings, including administrative offices, staff residences, and inmate housing. Educational, vocational, and treatment programs are integral, with offerings such as a Drug and Alcohol Unit, Sex Offender Treatment Program, and Personal Care Unit for medical needs.
Accredited by the American Correctional Association since January 2000, SCI Waymart continues to meet rigorous standards, with successful reaccreditation every three years thereafter. In the realm of Correctional Industries, the facility runs a garment plant employing 120 inmates, producing uniforms and rain gear for state prisons and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
