It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.

While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.

Screven County Prison is a minimum and medium-security state facility that houses 148 adult male inmates. There are five dormitories within the facility; two dorms house 36 and two house 38 offenders each with seven isolations/segregation cells in the last dorm. Costs for these inmates are allocated through other budget divisions where correctional officers supervise their work which is provided by the Screven County Government.

After processing, inmates are assigned to housing areas based on their classification. Compliance with jail rules generally results in a lower classification and increased privileges, while rule violations or additional charges lead to higher classification and fewer privileges. Trustees, or inmate workers within the jail, perform tasks such as cooking, laundry, and commissary management, often receiving minimal compensation or sentence reductions for their services.

The jail is structured into "pods," which include a large common area equipped with tables and attached seats, and individual cells typically arranged on two levels. Inmates are required to spend certain times confined in their cells. In contrast, at other times they congregate in the pod for recreational activities such as playing cards, engaging in games, reading, or watching television. Movement outside the pod, including visits to the commissary, library, or recreation area, occurs under the constant supervision of unarmed correctional officers. The county jail environment is considered less stressful than a prison, primarily due to the shorter duration of sentences served.

The jail provides a phone program exclusively for outbound calls; inmates are unable to receive incoming calls. Collect calls from inmates can be expensive, with costs sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Alternatively, setting up an account through a third-party phone company might involve high per-minute fees. For those who communicate frequently with inmates, click here for discounts on these calls. All phone conversations are recorded, so it is advised to avoid discussing sensitive legal matters.

Books and magazines ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. Orders not originating from the publisher will be rejected. In addition, inmates can receive letters, pictures, and selfies through a convenient app, with package options starting at $8.00.

Inmate workers are selected based on their conduct and cooperation with staff, and participating in the community service program can sometimes lead to sentence reductions. Commissary services are available weekly, with orders submitted via kiosk two days before delivery. During holidays, the spending limits may be increased. Upon receiving their commissary items, inmates must present identification, verify their order, and sign for it in the presence of the commissary employee. Essential hygiene items, including USPS stamps and writing materials, are provided to indigent inmates.
