When someone you care about ends up in a state prison, it can be tough to navigate the ins and outs of the system. It's here to help you get the lowdown on SD DOC - Mike Durfee State Prison so you can stay connected and support your loved one during their time inside.
Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.
While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.
The MDSP, situated on the former campus of the University of South Dakota at Springfield, has a rich history dating back to its establishment in December 1984. Initially, it accommodated both male and female offenders following the closure of the USD/S and the subsequent authorization by the 1984 Legislature. Female inmates from the Women's Correctional Facility in Yankton were the first to be relocated to this new facility, with male inmates following suit in January 1985.
For several years, Durfee State Prison operated as a co-ed institution, with male and female offenders housed on the same campus. However, this changed with the inauguration of the Herm Solem Public Safety Center in Pierre in November 1997. Subsequently, all female inmates were transferred to the South Dakota Women's Prison within the Solem Public Safety Center, marking the Durfee State Prison's transition into an all-male facility.
In a significant tribute to his service and contributions, the prison was renamed the Mike Durfee State Prison on September 10, 1999, in honor of Mike Durfee, the Deputy Director of the South Dakota Department of Corrections at the time.
As a Level III facility, the MDSP predominantly houses inmates classified as medium custody. The institution is notable for its array of inmate work programs, many of which are based directly at the prison itself. These vocational industries not only serve as a means of rehabilitation but also contribute to the operation and maintenance of the facility.
The vocational programs offered at MDSP encompass various fields, providing inmates with valuable skills and training to support their reintegration into society upon release. These programs play a crucial role in equipping inmates with employable skills, enhancing their prospects for successful reentry into the workforce and reducing the likelihood of recidivism.
Overall, the Mike Durfee State Prison stands as a cornerstone of the South Dakota correctional system, dedicated to fostering inmate rehabilitation, promoting public safety, and honoring the legacy of Mike Durfee through its continued commitment to excellence in correctional practices.
MDSP maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
