The Oglala Lakota County Sheriff's Office, under the leadership of Sheriff Vanessa Plume, is committed to upholding public safety and law enforcement throughout the county. Sheriff Plume, the first female sheriff in the county’s history, brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served with the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Oglala Lakota County uses the Pine Ridge Detention Center to house inmates, ensuring secure accommodations for those in custody. The office is responsible for enforcing state laws, executing court orders, and apprehending individuals while coordinating with local, state, and tribal agencies to provide essential law enforcement services.
When an individual is arrested within the county, the Sheriff’s Office oversees the initial booking process, including documentation of personal information, recording the arrest details, and conducting fingerprinting and photographing. Due to the absence of a county jail, arrestees are not held at the Sheriff's administrative offices; instead, they are promptly transferred to the adjacent Detention Center. This facility, located within the reservation, is equipped to house inmates and provide for their needs from the time of their arrest until the legal process is completed.
The term Oglala Lakota refers to both a Native American tribe and a county in southwestern South Dakota. The Oglala Lakota people are one of the seven bands of the Lakota Sioux, historically recognized for their warrior culture and resistance against U.S. expansion during the 19th century. Today, the Oglala Lakota Nation is based on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, one of the largest Native American reservations in the United States.
Oglala Lakota County, named in honor of the tribe, is unique as it exists entirely within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Unlike other counties in South Dakota, it does not have its own county seat; instead, government operations are primarily managed from Hot Springs. Law enforcement within the county is a combined effort between the Oglala Lakota County Sheriff's Office and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety, with tribal jurisdiction playing a central role in many cases.
The county was originally designated Shannon County in 1875, named after Peter C. Shannon, a former chief justice of the Dakota Territory Supreme Court. However, due to the county’s deep-rooted connection to the Oglala Lakota people and its location entirely within tribal lands, a movement emerged to rename the county to better reflect its Indigenous identity. In 2014, residents voted in favor of the change, and on May 1, 2015, it was officially renamed Oglala Lakota County, making it the first county in South Dakota to adopt a Native American name.
