The Stanislaus Minimum Units 1 & 2 is a detention center located at 200 E Hackett Rd Modesto, CA which is operated locally by the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Stanislaus County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Modesto Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.

Minimum Housing Units 1 and 2 are integral components of Stanislaus County’s detention infrastructure, each serving as dedicated facilities for minimum-security inmates. Unit 1, a 192-bed facility, was initially opened in 1994 as part of the Public Safety Center (SDC-West). It functioned as a minimum-security housing unit for inmates at the Public Safety Center. However, in 2013, following the closure of the Men's Honor Farm on Grayson Road and the subsequent opening of Unit 2, Minimum Housing Unit 1 became a separate facility distinct from the Safety Center.

Unit 2, also a 192-bed facility, was established in 2013 to replace several barracks that were destroyed in a fire at the Men's Honor Farm in 2010. This newer unit was designed to provide a secure and modern environment for housing minimum-security inmates, continuing the county's commitment to maintaining safe and effective detention facilities.

Together, Minimum Housing Units 1 and 2 offer a combined capacity of 384 beds, providing crucial housing options for those serving sentences in minimum-security conditions. These units are designed to facilitate the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates through various programs and services while ensuring that their custodial needs are met in a secure yet less restrictive environment.

The jail offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Alternatively, setting up an account through a third-party phone company may entail high fees per minute of usage. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.

Books and magazines ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. The Jail enforces this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.

Inmate workers are chosen based on conduct and cooperation with staff. Participation in the community service program can sometimes reduce sentences. Commissary is available weekly, with orders submitted via kiosk two days in advance. On holidays, there may be increased spending limits. Upon receiving commissary items, inmates must present their ID, check their order, and sign for it in the presence of the commissary employee. Indigent inmates are provided with all essential basic hygiene items including USPS stamps and writing materials.

Incarcerated individuals may also have access to the Jail Alternatives Program, which allows them to serve their sentences while maintaining employment, thereby supporting their families financially. The development and management of these programs fall under the purview of the Facility Commander or a designated representative. Staff members play a crucial role by providing feedback on existing programs and suggesting improvements or new initiatives.

Programs are generally available within the housing units, and the Chaplain may visit these areas to assist with specific issues affecting inmates' adjustment to custody. Participation in facility programs is open to all inmates, regardless of race, national origin, creed, gender, economic status, or political beliefs. Educational offerings include the Breaking Barriers Program, high school equivalency classes, E.L.S.E., and parenting courses. Substance abuse programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Women of Wisdom, and Narcotics Anonymous are also available to support recovery efforts.
