The Stark Co Jail is a detention center located at 4500 Atlantic Blvd NE Canton, OH which is operated locally by the Stark County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Stark County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Canton Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.
The Jail Division of the Stark County Sheriff's Office is entrusted with the secure and efficient operation of the Stark County Jail. The division comprises a diverse team including Deputy Sheriffs, Corrections Officers, Drug and Alcohol Counselors, Clerks, and Supervisors. Additionally, contract service employees manage essential food, medical, and mental health needs, while volunteers contribute to various inmate services. Together, these individuals uphold the security of the jail and deliver a broad spectrum of services to inmates, as mandated by state and federal regulations. These services encompass counseling, visitation, religious activities, commissary sales, and library access.
The jail accommodates individuals facing a wide range of charges, from minor traffic offenses to serious crimes, including those awaiting trial, sentencing, or transfer to state institutions, fugitives awaiting extradition, and inmates awaiting probation or parole revocations. The facility also houses individuals committed by the county’s three municipal courts, Common Pleas Court, and Domestic Relations Court. As a 24-hour booking facility for all law enforcement agencies in Stark County, the jail has an operational capacity of 526 inmates.
The booking process at the Stark County Jail operates continuously, staffed by security personnel and booking clerks responsible for the intake and release of all inmates. Booking clerks gather essential information from the arresting agency and the offender, which is entered into the Jail's Information Management System. Security officers conduct fingerprinting and photographing for identification, classify inmates based on their potential for violence or vulnerability to determine appropriate housing, and inventory and secure each inmate’s personal belongings. To control contraband, officers utilize the SecurPass Body Scanner and conduct searches incident to arrest. Before being housed, inmates are required to shower, and they receive jail clothing, a hygiene kit, bedding, and a copy of the jail’s Rules and Regulations.
Books and magazines ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate.
Commissary is available weekly, with orders submitted via kiosk two days in advance. On holidays, orders may be doubled. Indigent inmates must miss two commissary days to receive a weekly indigent pack containing basic hygiene items, and indigent mail is stamped only for the Attorney of Record or the Court. Upon receiving commissary items, inmates must present their ID, check their order, and sign for it in the presence of the commissary employee.
The jail offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Alternatively, setting up an account through a third-party phone company may entail high fees per minute of usage. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged. You may send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at $8.00.
The Stark County Jail provides various programs aimed at supporting inmate rehabilitation and personal development. Weekly non-denominational chapel services and Bible study classes are available to inmates. Bibles and other religious materials are distributed upon request and must be returned upon release.
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings are held weekly. These programs are beneficial for addressing substance abuse issues and provide inmates with an opportunity to leave their housing units. Only inmates who are court-ordered or classified as non-violent may participate, and all programs have waiting lists due to class size limitations. Security background checks are conducted for group leaders by Inmate Services. The Inmate Alcohol and Drug Abuse Rehabilitation Program (IARP) provides in-house chemical dependency counseling for inmates with substance abuse issues. On-site counselors facilitate group sessions, offer case management services, and provide aftercare. The program aims to reduce jail overcrowding and make efficient use of inmates' time. It is certified by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services, and all participating counselors are licensed or certified in chemical dependency counseling.

Visitors to the Stark County Jail must schedule their visits through ICSolutions.com, selecting an available day and time for the visit. Visits need to be arranged at least 24 hours in advance to account for potential conflicts with inmates' court appearances, programs, or other appointments. Visitors will receive an email notification if their scheduled visit needs to be rescheduled. It is mandatory to arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled visit time with a valid, unexpired photo ID for registration.
Each inmate is allowed one 30-minute visit per week, with a maximum of two visitors per visit, including minors. Proper photo identification is required for all visitors, and minors must be accompanied by an adult. Once a visitor enters the visiting room and picks up the phone, and the inmate does the same, the visit is considered to have taken place for the week. If an inmate chooses to refuse a visit, they must notify the housing officer before the visit begins by picking up the phone.
Visitors must adhere to specific rules while in the visiting room: no food, beverages, or cell phones are permitted, and proper attire is required. Visiting officers have the authority to determine what constitutes proper attire. Visitors are limited to one visit per day, although exceptions may apply. The visiting stations operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and visitors may have to wait for their visit or may not be able to visit if they arrive late or close to the registration cut-off time. Off-site visitation is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and details, pricing, and schedules can be found on ICSolutions.com. Off-site visits do not count towards the inmate’s one permitted on-site visit.
Any inappropriate behavior during visits will result in immediate consequences, including temporary or permanent suspension from visitation and potential criminal charges. On-site visitors must park in the designated visitor parking lot and proceed to the building marked "Stark County Jail," located on the east side of the Administration building.
