When someone you care about ends up in a state prison, it can be tough to navigate the ins and outs of the system. From figuring out how to stay in touch to understanding what you can do to make their time easier, it can feel overwhelming. That's where this webpage comes in handy. It's here to help you get the lowdown on SCI Huntingdon so you can stay connected and support your loved one during their time inside.

Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.

While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.

SCI Huntingdon, Pennsylvania's oldest continuously operating State Correctional Institution since 1889, originally aimed to reform and educate young male offenders. Inmates received vocational training in various trades like painting, plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, and more. The institution, almost entirely self-sufficient, generated its electricity and sourced water from on-site springs. It encompassed a diverse range of facilities including a foundry, blacksmith shop, lime kiln, and farm supplying food for the kitchen.

Today, SCI Huntingdon is a close-custody state prison housing approximately 2,100 adult male inmates across 14 housing units and over 75 structures. Inmates engage in vocational activities facilitated by the correctional industries program, including a garment factory, detergent factory, and printing/sticker factory. Additionally, they participate in the community work program, providing labor for various community projects like road cleanup crews.

The facility offers academic education up to GED level and vocational education covering business, auto mechanics, barbering, building trades, printing, and warehouse operations. Vocational programs can accommodate up to 160 inmates and offer industry-recognized certifications. Apprenticeship programs are available in fields such as building maintenance, auto mechanics, bricklaying, and more.

Inmate programs address diverse needs, including family/relationship support, re-entry preparation, alcohol and other drug treatment, offense-related interventions, and mental health support. These programs aim to equip inmates with the skills and resources needed for successful reintegration into society.

SCI Huntingdon's Correctional Industries program, introduced in 1954, operates major industrial plants including a garment/clothing plant, soap/detergent plant, and print/sticker plant. The Community Work Program, initiated in January 2013, has contributed nearly 4,000 hours of community work, collaborating with entities like Smithfield Township, Bricktown Senior Citizens Center, and PennDOT's Adopt a Highway Program for litter pickup and general labor.
