SCI Smithfield, a close-custody state prison, detains approximately 1,380 adult male inmates across its eleven housing units within twenty-two buildings. These units accommodate inmates in single cells or multiple occupancy cells based on security needs. The Correctional Industries Program employs up to 50 inmates in a garment factory, offering select offenders work opportunities.
Construction of SCI Smithfield concluded in 1988, with subsequent expansions including H, I, J, and K Blocks, along with a Secure Residential Treatment Unit (SRTU). Despite initial design for 492 inmates, subsequent expansions increased the capacity to 1,380 beds. As of June 23, 2014, the inmate population stands at 1,339.
The facility spans 61 acres, with 31 acres enclosed within the perimeter. Staffing comprises 504 full-time employees, maintaining operations and overseeing inmate programs. Academic education encompasses adult basic education, GED classes, and pre-vocational training, alongside vocational programs in building trades, business occupations, custodial maintenance, and barber management.
Centralized inmate programs cover athletic and leisure activities, geriatric services, HIV support, supplementary education, and social services addressing various needs, including substance abuse, violence prevention, and offender rehabilitation. The Special Needs Unit caters to specific inmate requirements, including medication compliance and adjustment support.
SCI Smithfield operates a garment factory, producing winter coats, jackets, and boxers, employing approximately 50 inmates. Additionally, the facility collaborates with Canine Partners for Life in a puppy program, where inmates train service dogs for special needs.
The Community Work Program engages inmates in voluntary labor, contributing over 4,374 hours in 2013 to projects like painting, mulching, general labor, and interior renovations. These initiatives promote community involvement and skill-building among inmates.
