The Sussex Co Jail is a detention center located at 41 High St Newton, NJ which is operated locally by the Sussex County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Sussex County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Newton Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.

The Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility (KDCF), established in 1978, serves as the operations and command center for the Bureau of Corrections. Located in Sussex County, it was named in honor of Walter Keogh-Dwyer, a former state assemblyman, freeholder, and mayor of Vernon Township. KDCF is a 24-hour facility managed by sworn corrections officers and administrative staff, responsible for supervising inmates during transfers to the Morris County Correctional Facility, court appearances, and medical appointments. The facility adheres to all state standards for adult county correctional institutions.

KDCF also administers the Sheriff’s Labor Assistance Program (SLAP), a community-based alternative to incarceration for nonviolent offenders sentenced by Sussex County Courts. Participants in SLAP are required to perform moderate manual labor for nonprofit organizations in the county, allowing them to fulfill their sentences without imprisonment. This enables offenders to maintain employment and support their families while contributing positively to the community.

SLAP participants are carefully screened and must comply with all program rules, with the risk of their sentence being revoked if non-compliance occurs. They work under the constant supervision of armed officers and are only assigned to nonprofit agencies. Work such as operating power tools, climbing high ladders, and removing hazardous materials is prohibited.

Nonprofit agencies in Sussex County interested in SLAP assistance must submit a formal request on organizational letterhead to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office. The request must include project details, location, and a contact person. Before the project begins, a representative from SLAP will inspect the job site. Equipment and tools necessary for the job must be provided by the requesting agency, and arrangements for garbage disposal are also the responsibility of the agency.
