When someone you care about ends up in a state prison, it can be tough to navigate the ins and outs of the system. Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.
While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.
The Murray Unit, exclusively for female inmates, accommodates up to 1,264 individuals across custody levels G1 to G4, including security detention. Situated over an approximate acreage of 1,283, it operates alongside Crain, Hilltop, and Woodman units, engaging in various agricultural activities such as cultivating edible and field crops, alongside regional pest control and security measures like horses and pack canines.
While the facility does not engage in manufacturing or logistics operations, it ensures proper unit maintenance for a safe and functional environment. Additionally, it offers a range of medical services, including ambulatory care, dental, and mental health services, with provisions for wheelchair accommodation and assisted disability services for offenders with hearing, vision, and mobility impairments. Physical and occupational therapy, brace and limb clinics, and chronic care clinics are available on-site.
Murray Unit hosts special treatment programs like the Corrective Intervention Pre-Release Program (CIPP) and the Mental Health Therapeutic Diversion Program (MHTDP) to address specific inmate needs. Educational opportunities include literacy programs, special education, and career and technology programs such as hospitality and tourism, provided in collaboration with Central Texas College Academic and Texas A&M University (Central Texas) University Academic.
Moreover, the facility offers additional programs and services like faith-based dormitories, peer education, and reentry planning to support inmate rehabilitation efforts. Initiatives like Patriot Paws, community tours, and the GO KIDS program aim to foster personal growth and responsible citizenship among inmates.
In terms of community engagement, Murray Unit contributes to city and county agencies through various community work projects. Additionally, it welcomes volunteer initiatives ranging from literacy and substance abuse education to mentoring, life skills workshops, and religious studies, including the Women's Storybook Project, promoting rehabilitation and empowerment among female inmates.
