When someone you care about ends up in a state prison, it can be tough to navigate the ins and outs of the system. Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.
While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.
The Glen Ray Goodman Unit, exclusively for male inmates, has a capacity of 68 and accommodates individuals classified as G1, G2, and substance abuse offenders. Situated on approximately 494 acres, the facility engages in agricultural operations such as contract grazing, hay production, and maintains security horses and a unit garden. However, it does not have manufacturing or logistics operations. Facility operations focus on unit maintenance, ensuring the smooth functioning of the establishment, with no additional specific operations beyond its core functions.
Medical services at the Goodman Unit cover ambulatory medical and dental care and are managed by UTMB. The facility offers digital medical services (DMS) and electronic specialty clinics on a single level, ensuring inmates have access to necessary healthcare support. Special treatment programs include the Intermediate Sanction Facility (ISF) and the In-Prison Therapeutic Community (IPTC) aimed at addressing specific needs, particularly related to substance abuse.
Educational opportunities at the Goodman Unit include literacy programs, CHANGES/Pre-Release, cognitive intervention, and career and technology programs such as Business Computer Information Systems II. Additionally, the facility provides access to a faith-based dormitory and adult education programs as available, alongside chaplaincy services and the GO KIDS Initiative to promote personal growth and development among inmates.
