Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.

While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.

The Plane State Jail exclusively houses female inmates, with a capacity of 2,064 in the main unit and an additional 20 at the BAMBI facility located in Santa Maria. Situated on approximately 394 acres, it shares its location with the Hightower Unit and Henley Unit. Collaborating with these units, Plane engages in various agricultural operations, including the management of security horses, security pack canines, and a unit garden.

Unlike some other facilities, Plane State Jail does not have manufacturing or logistics operations. Instead, the focus is on facility operations, primarily centered around unit maintenance to ensure a safe and functional environment for inmates. Additional operations include substance abuse screening and assessment, with laundry services provided for the Henley State Jail.

Medical services at Plane are comprehensive, offering ambulatory medical, dental, and mental health care. Specialized care includes digital medical services, OB/GYN, and mammography specialty clinics, all managed by UTMB. These services are provided on a single level, including CPAP accommodating housing.

Special treatment programs at Plane cater to the specific needs of inmates, including the State Jail Substance Abuse Program (SJSAFP) and Our Roadway to Freedom initiative. Educational opportunities abound, with literacy programs, pre-release initiatives, cognitive intervention, and career and technology programs such as business computer information systems and construction carpentry.

Additionally, the facility offers various programs and services to support inmate rehabilitation and successful reentry into society. These include faith-based dormitories, prisoner reentry initiatives, parenting seminars, and the Baby and Mother Bonding Initiative (BAMBI). Volunteer initiatives are vital in supporting these efforts, encompassing literacy and education, employment and job skills, substance abuse education, life skills, mentoring, and religious or faith-based studies and activities.

Furthermore, Plane State Jail actively engages in community work projects, providing services to city and county agencies, the local school district, and various volunteer initiatives such as the Girl Scouts Beyond Bars and the Women's Storybook Project, aiming to foster connections and support networks for inmates both during and after their incarceration.

Visitation Information

Inmate Visitation

Visitation plays an important role in maintaining the association between inmates and their friends and family as well as strengthening family ties. Visitation Procedure Update (effective December 28, 2023)

Preparing for your visit:

Before you travel to a unit:

  • Confirm the inmate is assigned to the unit you are planning to visit and has visitation privileges.
    Inmate Information Search

  • Confirm the unit visitation schedule and verify that visitation has not been canceled. An eligible inmate cannot receive visitors if visitation has been canceled.

  • Do not bring cash (except coins, not more than $35).

  • No cell phones inside the secure perimeter.

  • Spiritual visits must be coordinated through the warden’s office.

Each inmate is only allowed one visit per weekend. To the extent possible, individuals on an inmate’s Visitors List should coordinate with one another and with the inmate to prevent subsequent visitors from being declined when they arrive at the unit.
