Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.
While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.
The Marlin Unit, designated for female inmates, has a capacity of 606 individuals and occupies approximately 25 acres of land. While the facility does not engage in agricultural or manufacturing operations, it prioritizes Unit Maintenance to ensure a safe and functional environment.
Medical services at the Marlin Unit include ambulatory medical and dental care, supplemented by limited mental health services. The facility also offers medical showers and Telemedicine Services to meet the healthcare needs of its residents. Medical operations are overseen and managed by UTMB.
One of the unique aspects of the Marlin Unit is its Female Cognitive Pre-Release Program (FCPRP), designed to address the specific needs of female inmates preparing for reintegration into society. Educational opportunities include literacy programs covering Adult Basic Education/GED, CHANGES/Pre-Release, and Cognitive Intervention, fostering personal development and preparation for successful reentry.
In addition to these programs, the Marlin Unit provides various supplementary services aimed at supporting inmate well-being and rehabilitation. These include a Faith-Based Dormitory, Reentry Planning assistance, Chaplaincy Services, and participation in the GO KIDS Initiative, which focuses on empowering and supporting incarcerated mothers.
While the Marlin Unit does not currently engage in community work projects, it encourages volunteer involvement in Religious/Faith-Based Studies and Activities, recognizing the importance of spiritual and emotional support in the rehabilitation process. Through these initiatives, the Marlin Unit strives to create a supportive and nurturing environment conducive to inmate growth and positive change.
