When someone you care about ends up in a state prison, it can be tough to navigate the ins and outs of the system. From figuring out how to stay in touch to understanding what you can do to make their time easier, it can feel overwhelming. That's where this webpage comes in handy. It's here to help you get the lowdown on MI DOC - Thumb Correctional Facility (TCF) so you can stay connected and support your loved one during their time inside.
Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.
While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.
The Thumb Correctional, established in 1987, operates as a Level II facility for male prisoners aged 18 and older. It comprises seven Level II general population housing units, each equipped with day rooms, showers, laundry facilities, and staff offices. Notably, there are housing units designated for adult prisoners, those sentenced under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act (HYTA), youthful populations, and medically frail prisoners. The segregation unit features stainless steel sinks and toilets, along with slotted doors for meal services. Administrative and other essential buildings include education, food services, healthcare, maintenance, and Michigan State Industries (MSI) buildings, which provide industrial laundry services.
In terms of programming, the education department offers a range of services including Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Education Development (GED), and Special Education Services with an emphasis on achieving the GED. Vocational trades classes such as Employment Readiness (ER), Building Trades (BT), and Food Technology and Hospitality Management (FT) are also available, with completion leading to state and/or national certifications. HYTA and youthful prisoners can participate in the Edovo Tablet Program, offering educational programming.
The facility hosts evidence-based programs such as Thinking for a Change (T4C), Violence Prevention Program (VPP), Phase II Substance Abuse, Advanced Substance Abuse Treatment (ASAT), and Alcoholics Anonymous. Other services encompass general and law library access, a hobbycraft program, religious services, a barbershop, and recreational activities including access to exercise equipment and a gymnasium.
Furthermore, TCF operates two dog programs, MI-PAWS and Stiggy's Dogs, providing prisoners with training opportunities to prepare dogs for adoption as service animals for individuals with disabilities and military veterans suffering from PTSD. This initiative not only benefits the recipients of the service dogs but also equips prisoners with valuable skills that may lead to employment opportunities upon release.
Security measures at TCF include triple 12-foot fences, rolls of razor ribbon wire, towers, electric perimeter detection systems, and a perimeter vehicle with armed personnel. Surveillance camera systems are strategically located throughout the facility to ensure security and monitor activities effectively.
TCF maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
