It accommodates both male and female inmates aged 16 and older, and also houses inmates from other county jails within New York State, State Parole violators, and Federal Inmates for the U.S. Marshal’s Service. The Tioga County Jail has earned and maintains accreditation through the Joint Accreditation Committee of the New York State Commission of Corrections and the New York State Sheriff’s Institute.

The correctional staff is led by Lieutenant Tim Agan and includes 1 Lieutenant, 6 Sergeants, 42 full-time Correction Officers, 1 Cook Manager, and 3 part-time Cooks. All Correction Officers are hired by New York State Civil Service Law and are certified as New York State Peace Officers.

Following the intake process, which includes property inventory, medical screening, and booking, inmates are assigned to the general population. Housing assignments are based on the classification of their charges, whether felony or misdemeanor, to ensure proper management and safety within the facility.

After processing, inmates are assigned to a housing area based on classification.
