It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.

While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.

Deerfield Correctional Center, situated in Capron, VA, is a Level 2 state prison under the jurisdiction of the Virginia Department of Corrections. It has a capacity for around 1,100 male inmates distributed among seven general population housing units. Each unit, labeled A through G, serves specific populations or needs. A, B, and C units consist of two pods each, accommodating 88 offenders in an open dormitory layout, with Building A specifically designated for military veterans. D unit houses 57 elderly inmates requiring assisted living, alongside 96 general population beds. E unit has two pods, one for general population and the other for inmates with diabetes. F unit caters to mentally impaired offenders, while G unit accommodates a small number of inmates needing special observation or assistance. Notably, Deerfield does not have a segregation unit; instead, inmates fitting this profile are transferred to other correctional facilities in Virginia.

Security Level 2 assignment criteria include no escape history within the past five years, reaching parole eligibility for single life sentences, and no disruptive behavior for at least 24 months. The facility opened in 1994 and housed an average daily population of 1,069 inmates as of June 2008, with specialized populations including geriatric and assisted living inmates. While it doesn't participate in Virginia Correctional Enterprises, Deerfield offers various programs and services aligned with the broader goals of the state prison system.

Upon entry, inmates undergo a comprehensive assessment to determine their security and treatment programming needs. Core programs encompass inmate work activities, substance abuse treatment, mental health services, and life skills programming. Substance abuse treatment includes intensive programs like Therapeutic Community, recognized for its effectiveness in addressing substance abuse and criminal behavior. Additionally, the facility offers education programs, support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, and life skills training to prepare inmates for reintegration into the community upon release. Various other programs cater to specific inmate needs, promoting positive growth and reducing recidivism.
