At VA DOC - James River Work Center (JRWC)'s state corrections facility, well-behaved inmates can join a work release program, getting regular jobs in the public sector during the day. Depending on the rules, they might work weekdays and go home at night, serving their sentences only on weekends. Some stay in halfway houses or at home when they're not working. As they get closer to getting out, they might switch to reintegration programs and could even get full-time jobs when they are released.
This program has perks like better chances of finding a job after getting out, finding work faster, making more money afterward, and being less likely to go back to jail. JRWC wants to help inmates succeed in getting back into society.
Established in 1896, the James River Work Center, formerly known as the James River Correctional Center, originated as a penal farm operation in Goochland County. Initially serving "miscreants and the infirm," the original facility ceased operations in 2011. However, the James River Work Center remains active on the same site, encompassing 1,202 acres under the Virginia Department of Corrections.
Operating as a minimum security state prison, the center focuses on inmate rehabilitation through diverse programs. Notably, the Greener Pastures Program allows offenders to engage in horse management skills by working with retired thoroughbreds. Additionally, inmates participate in employment opportunities on a dairy farm located within the prison grounds.
With its low-security designation, the center has specific eligibility criteria, excluding individuals convicted of severe crimes or with a history of escape or behavioral issues.
In partnership with the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, the James River chapter established a Second Chances program in 2007. In this program, inmates care for horses and partake in the nationally acclaimed Groom Elite program. This collaboration provides mutual benefits, offering horses lifelong care and potential adoption while facilitating inmates' rehabilitation.
Beyond its equine programs, the James River Work Center contributes to Virginia's broader prison system by offering rehabilitative initiatives tailored to inmates' needs based on sentence lengths and behavior. These initiatives encompass inmate work activities, substance abuse treatment, mental health services, and life skills programming, aiming to foster positive growth and reduce recidivism rates.

Schedule a Visit - Once you receive approval to visit an inmate in a VADOC facility, you must schedule your visit online using the Visitation Scheduler. If you are a new user, you must first register using the “Register Today” option.
Prepare for Your Scheduled Visit - Once you have both applied for visitation and scheduled your visit, please review the following information to help you prepare for your in-person visit.
Plan - Please arrive at the facility one hour before your visit for security screening. No food or drinks will be allowed in the facility, and there will be no access to vending machines.
