The Wayne Co Jail III is a detention center located at 3501 Hamtramck Dr Hamtramck, MI which is operated locally by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Wayne County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Hamtramck Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.

The Division III Jail, also known as the William Dickerson Detention Facility opened in November 1991 and has a current capacity of 896 beds. It operates as a direct supervision type facility.

To deposit money into a Wayne County Jail inmate's commissary account, the money order must include the inmate's full and correct name and WCJ inmate number. Additionally, a return address and preferably a telephone number should be provided to contact the sender in case the inmate is discharged or there are issues with the money order. While there is no limit on the total amount that can be deposited, individual money orders must not exceed $100. Money orders for inmates at Jail Division I or II can be dropped off at the deposit window at Jail 1 at any time. For Jail Division III inmates, money orders can be dropped off at Jail 3. Alternatively, money orders can be mailed to inmates with their inmate number and the jail division they are housed in on both the envelope and money order.

Books and magazines ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate.

The jail offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Alternatively, setting up an account through a third-party phone company may entail high fees per minute of usage. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.

Jail Work Programs: Sentenced inmates classified as low-security risks are permitted to perform labor in areas such as the kitchen, laundry, housing units, and support services. Their tasks include distributing linen and jail-issued clothing, garbage disposal, sanitation, and assisting with material transfers from delivery trucks. Although these inmate workers are not paid in currency, they can earn up to a 25% sentence reduction. This program operates in all three jails, saving Wayne County taxpayers over ten million dollars annually.

Tether Program: The Wayne County Sheriff's Office runs a Tether Program that monitors an average of over 500 participants daily and handles over 3,000 enrollments annually. This program uses GPS technology to track participants and employs alcohol monitoring equipment to detect consumption through the skin. The Tether Unit operates around-the-clock notification procedures from Monitoring Centers to respond quickly to program violations. Referrals for the program come from all Wayne County District Courts and the Wayne County Third Circuit Court.

Veterans Justice Outreach Program (VJO): The VJO provides information and assessment services to eligible veterans involved with the criminal justice system. By offering alternative treatment options, the program refers veterans to appropriate VA and community services, aiding in community readjustment, treatment adherence, and recidivism prevention.

Education Training Research Services (ETRS): These jail-based programs cater to felons and misdemeanants, guiding clients toward recovery by educating them about addiction. Frequent interactions reinforce recovery principles, empowering clients to control their thoughts and actions, improve relationships, and make better choices to avoid recidivism.
