I heard if you get another phone number with the area code of the phone service company the jail uses it will make the calls cheaper. Is that correct and if so how do you go about doing that?

This depends on the facility and the carrier. There are about 30 companies providing inmate calling from their facility. Only one of the companies works like you describe in your question. The industry is hard to follow as some of the carriers are charging higher rates for local calls than they are for long distance. Our recommendation is to send us your telephone number and the name of the institution, we will give you an honest estimate of the savings - if any. We will also let you know what realistic expectations you should have the carrier.
