As long as it takes. Detainers are honored by almost all jurisdictions unless it is an ICE issue, then some sanctuary city detention centers will not honor the detainer. If this is not ICE, they will take their sweet time when two officers can travel to pick up their hold.

Unfortunately you have no influence over the custody level of an inmate. No one, not even a judge can designate an offender (they can only suggest or recommend, but the corrections department is independent and not bound to abide). Non-violent offenders are normally placed in minimum custody level facilities, especially if the sentence is under twelve months.

There are cases where the camp unescorted inmates are allowed to take a Greyhound bus to their new location. The camp "town driver" would taxi inmates to and from release points or transfer ins. We have not heard of inmates being allowed to go with a family member, but is sounds like a good idea. You should call the camp counselor and ask, they are very nice and polite in the federal system.

This sounds like a state inmate that has been transferred to a contract prison in another state due to several possible reasons. One is overcrowding, the other could be if he has a codefendant in the same prison (they separate them), third could be disciplinary, it could also be that they have a court date and need to be within a reasonable distance from the courthouse.

This means that he is probably in a facility that is not a BOP-run facility (but he is in custody somewhere). Do you know if he had to make a court court appearance? This would make sense, that if the Release Date is Unknown it might mean he is awaiting sentencing, either someone on his case has not settled and therefore his sentence has not been handed down. This process could take a few months before transfer (or it could be tomorrow). The issue is logistics and bed space. The offenders come into the Reception Center and are then interviewed and counseled on their upcoming sentence. There is a plan put in place, inmate programming that is recommended to the offender. Depending on how that is received by them, they'll move nim along to permanent housing which is designated by the administration, as to their custody level, etc.

The transfer to a state or federal facility will require that an Admission and Orientation process be concluded before privileges are instated. That being said, there are no restrictions on writing letters, only for the use of the phone and visitation until A & O is completed. This process could take a week or so, especially if the transfer required a stop or two along the way.
